But still a hero! Erdrick The Hero, to be precise.

I recently (VERY recently, 4 days ago in fact) became a fan of this series. I found out about the series through Gaijin Goombah on YouTube, who posted a video about Shantae's belly-dancing, and what culture it is most likely influenced by. The game looked interesting, but still didn't know much about it. I watched a few Let's Play videos of the game, and instantly knew it was something I'd have a ton of fun playing. Unfortunately, I have VERY bad luck when it comes to the games I enjoy... A copy of Shantae goes on eBay for $200-$300 (as I'm sure you seasoned fans know already), and I don't own a 3DS to play the VC version. So, I poked around on the internet and learned a few things: A) Shantae is a rather under-appreciated series. B) Shantae was one of the most advanced games on the GameBoy Color. C) Shantae is available on the 3DS as a Virtual Console title. D) There's a sequel, Risky's Revenge available as a DSiWare title, as well as an iOS app, and the game is also on Steam Greenlight. E) There are two more games in the works, 1/2 Genie Hero (which was funded on Kickstarter) and Pirate's Curse.

So what do I do? I immediately grab my iPad and download the demo of Risky's Revenge. A TON of fun, but rather short, even as demos go. But I'm really more of a PC gamer anyways, and seeing that the game is on Steam Greenlight, I decided to vote for it. (Only to find out that the game was already Greenlit and WayForward was working with Valve already.) So... now I wait until the PC port is available. Besides preferring PC gaming to tablet/mobile/handheld gaming, there's one other reason that I'd like to have the PC version: I'm getting into the Let's Play scene, and would like to record my gameplay, but I don't have the means to do so with my DSi (which is damaged anyways) or my iPhone/iPad.

I'm rather disappointed to find that Pirate's Curse is to be the conclusion of the Shantae series! I just got into the series!

So, there's my 4 days worth of history with the series. I'd really like to play the first game, but unless they remaster it (WayForward has remastered games before, right? Weren't they in charge of DuckTales Remastered?) I probably won't get to. (Unless I eventually get a 3DS, but Shantae's the only game on 3DS that I'm interested in, at least the only one that's available in the US.)

As I've said, I'm very unlucky when it comes to games. My favorite series of all time, Dragon Quest, previously known as Dragon Warrior in the US (Those of you familiar with the series will know about my username), has been seeing quite a lack of English releases lately. There was a port of DQ8 on iOS, but we've missed 4-5 games straight the past few years, most of which are 3DS titles. Also, the original version of Dragon Warrior IV on the NES is in the same boat as Shantae's GBC release: low amount of copies at release, leading to rediculously high prices nowadays. (Thankfully we at least got the remake for the DS.) Anyways, this is a Shantae forum, so if you want to learn more about DQ you can visit another website (trying not to "advertise" the only relevant DQ forum that exists nowadays... A google search would do well if you're interested. Anyways, my username's the same over there if you want to join and chat!)

More bad luck, I'm also a fan of the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon series'. One is dead, and the other has turned into the abomination that is Skylanders.

On a happier note, I was excited to learn about the Shantae Ret-2-Go/Swing n' Sway fangame. I believe in the power of fangames! (In fact, developing a Dragon Quest fangame in my free time.) Besides seeing fans' love for the series put into action, I'm actually excited for Swing n' Sway because it really does look like a fun concept. Too bad the last post in (what I believe is the last/current thread for the game) is from September...

Sorry my post is kind of scattered... Getting a lot of loosely-related to completely-unrelated info into one post can be challenging sometimes, especially when you have a wierd sleep schedule and are hungry but can't go downstairs at 5:00am to eat because other people are sleeping XD. I just graduated high school and haven't slept a normal schedule for almost a month...

Good to see ya!
I've been meaning to get more Dragon Quest into my diet. I've only really played through VIII and IX, but really enjoyed them. And yeah, it can be kinda sad when a series you like starts to fall by the wayside for whatever reason: Dragon Quest (X) included, as it's always been more popular in it's native Japan

I've played all of the games (except a couple of spinoffs and remakes), but haven't beat all of them. The only ones I've beaten are I, IV, V, VII (My favorite game of all time), and the spinoff, Rocket Slime. I'm currently playing through the iOS remake of DQ8.
I actually was lucky enough to play the PC beta of Dragon Quest X, but I didn't even get far enough to beat the single player intro. (I don't know any Japanese.)

I actually might have a way to play Shantae. I'm going to try and borrow my mom's 3DS for a while, she doesn't really play it that much anyways. Unfortunately, I won't be able to record my gameplay for my YouTube channel, but I'll keep an eye out for the GBC cart, and if I can, by some miracle, find it for an affordable price, I'll pick it up along with a game boy player. (And a gameshark so I can use a code to restore the GBC palletes in GBA mode, which I've heard look terrible on a TV.)

Speaking of GBA mode, does anybody know if the Virtual Console release has the special transformation?

Unfortunately, the 3DS VC version of Shantae does not have the GBA extras: same with the 3DS VC Legend of Zelda games. That sure is one expensive transformation, eh?

Anytime's good to get into Shantae. Pirate's Curse may be the end of an era, but also the beginning of a new age with Half-Genie Hero and anything else made possible by WayForward and it's fans: both official and fan-made  Smile

Wait, so 1/2 Genie hero comes AFTER Pirate's Curse? Is it a reboot or something? (I think the preview I saw for Pirate's Curse said it was the end of the series...)

Also, if I understand correctly, Pirate's Curse won't be getting a PC port, is this correct? If so, then that REALLY sucks. (I don't have a Wii U either...)

Correct. HGH is basically a reboot outside of the handheld trilogy.
Risky's Revenge is the only other Shantae game currently set for a PC release.
With all the other titles WayForward's been porting to PC lately though, anything could happen down the road

I guess I'll have to hold out on Pirate's Curse hoping for a PC release. If I get a Wii U or 3DS in the meantime I might get it though. (I don't plan on buying a bunch of games to play on my mom's 3DS, the only reason I'd borrow if for the first game is because it's so expensive nowadays.)

Hey Nai, I found your YouTube channel while looking through Shantae videos. You got a new subscriber today. Extra Smile

Welcome to ya, glad to see a new face here~ =D Yep, it's actually a great time to be diving freshly into Shantae, between the 3DS (original, Risky's Revenge, and Pirate's Curse), Steam (Risky's Revenge, one week from today!), and the variety of platforms that'll host Half-Genie Hero (aka Shantae 4, not the same as the first game, and definitely occurring *after* Pirate's Curse). Anyhow, Dragon Warrior/Quest III was the only game in the series I played, yet I enjoyed it immensely! ^^ That was all the way back on NES; I oughta try out the GBC remake sometime. Considering DQ3 was the first JRPG I played, I owe it a fair volume of gratitude. Anyhow, welcome aboard~  Smile

There's a copy of DWIII GBC at my semi-local used game shop... I'd pick it up and trade for Shantae XD *knows it's not going to happen*
