Any PC Games You Guys Still Play? Empty Any PC Games You Guys Still Play?

Post by .Luke Wed Dec 05, 2012 2:16 am

Anyway, what kind of PC games do you guys like to play when you don't have a mind for drawing or posting in the forums? (Hopefully the online kind so we can have more games to play with each other. =P) As for me, I'll list my favorites below. It doesn't have to be a free game either; you can include commercial titles too.

Sonic Robo Blast 2. The community sucks hairy donkey balls, IMO, but the devs are all great guys, and so is their fan game project 13+ years in the making. It's still the only 3D Sonic fan game to be in a complete, truly playable state, and once their netcode is finally ironed out, the final version of the game will see a release. With analog mode turned on and a controller in hand, it plays like any classic 3D platformer on the Playstation, which I still love about it.

Urban Terror. It's one of the most realistic FPS shooters I've ever played, and it's based on the Quake III Arena engine, so it runs great on just about any modern PC, and it's multiplatform as well, so I can enjoy from either Linux or Windows. Its servers are almost always full, so it's not hard to find some humans to play with.

OpenArena. Easily the only playable and great Open Source clone of Quake III Arena, with a focus on original, free content and an aim for 100% compatibility with all of Quake III's great mods. (In fact, you can even run Quake III itself as a mod under OpenArena!) It's near a complete state and may eventually get a reboot. With its large character roster, there's a model for everybody! I tend to play as either Neko, Arachna with a custom skin, or Angelyss in her red team skin. =P (Don't like Neko because she's a furry, because she's not. She's actually a normal human with too much plastic surgery, so it's freaking hilarious. XD All of the characters have a hilarious backstory!)

Quake III Arena. I was lucky to stumble across and buy the original game disc recently, so I run it as a mod under OpenArena on Linux and Windows, since the ioquake3 fork of the idtech3 engine is a huge improvement.

Halo CE Custom Edition. I still have an actual copy of this game, but don't play it too often, especially since its servers are empty now. Everybody's moved on to Halo 2 PC by now. =P

Marathon Trilogy. Bunjie actually released the contents of the game for free a long time ago, as well as the source code, (All of it is still copyrighted, so you can't sell a game built on its engine.) so thanks to the Aleph One project, it's possible to play the whole shooter trilogy comfortably on modern iterations of Windows, MAC, and Linux. And thanks to the community, even the HUD was revisited, and Bunjie released the HD assets from the XBOX Live ports, so the games looks a lot easier on the eyes. It also has online modes and nearly a dozen large scale game mods too. There is so much content to enjoy if you've got the skills to get through it, because believe me, the challenge is even harder than DOOM by a long shot. Twisted Evil

Minetest. For an open-source clone of Minecraft that's still a long ways from its 1.0 version, the developers have made a lot of progress in the past two years. ^^ It's compiled in C++ code written from scratch and has much better performance than Java-based Minecraft; it hasn't hiccuped a single time so far on me! It also supports up to ten players in multiplayer servers, allows you to install Minecraft skins, has tons of material to choose from, and with mods you can add tons more to the game. I'm using an animals mod with vampires right now. > : D

Freeciv. It's a great open-source clone of the original Civ games with its own twists. It's the only RTS you'll ever catch me playing. =P

SuperTuxKart. A new release was published just in time for Christmas, and it's a huge improvement over the last version! Better, smooth physics that handles more realistically than Mario Kart in some respects, all new original music that's fairly catchy, a story mode that's short, but sweet, and tons of other additions I can't begin to list! It's a great wacky racing game and I'm enjoying it a lot right now; it may remind some of you of Crash Team Racing. It doesn't have online or networked play, but it does have splitscreen modes, which is rare for a PC game. It's available on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

YGOPRO. Can't forget this game either! A great and free way to play the Yu-Gi-Oh card game. Very fast-paced and intuitive interface, love it. ^^

Well, that sums up my PC experience. XD So what about you guys? What do you play on your PCs, besides emulators and flash games? =P

As far as multiplayer PC games? Nothing really springs to mind outside of the usual Steam classics: Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead (1&2) to be specific. I'll also play the occasional Minecraft, though mainly with my nephew on whatever server he fancies at the time. I am looking forward to trying out Phantasy Star Online 2 next year: it's the first time in a while I've been genuinely excited by something from Sega Wink

I've also been looking forward to PSO2 as well. I've been a long time fan of the Phantasy Star series, both the old RPG's and the newer action styled games. I can also expect a larger playerbase from PSO2 compared to other free online games since there are many other PS fans.

Anyway I currently am not doing much PC gaming since I've currently got very little free time. I'll probably write later what all I liked playing most before though.

Didn't a lucky few get to help out with testing alpha builds for PSO2 a while back? Can't remember, it's been a while, but I'm glad that's still on rails for release. Always wanted to check out the series, but it kinda died with the Dreamcast up until this point. XD

Anyway, it's cool to see a TF2 player on here! I did have it on my Windows install, but even at the lowest settings, it just barely plays, and then hiccups a lot when more than 2 people are view, ugh. Intel hardware sucks for high-end games, so I just had to delete it. Ah well, when I can build a new desktop PC it will be one of many games I'll actually be able to enjoy to its fullest. =P

There were the Phantasy Star Portable Series on PSP, which is actually where many of the more recent PS fans come from. PSO2 also plays like the PSP games but improved of course.

I have TF2 on 360, but the servers have been long dead at least on that platform.

Oh yeah, totally forgot about Phantasy Star on the PSP; my memory's rusty on that one. =P

I can imagine TF2 servers on the Xbox are dead, just like they are on the PC version of HALO CE, or the Dreamcast port of Quake III. D: At least the game is getting tons of activity on the PC. If I had a desktop PC with decent specs, I'd play TF2 myself. In the meantime, I'm trying to get Quake Live to work on Firefox. XD I'd love to frag players old school style again!

Doubleposting because of an open-source sandbox game I just discovered a few days ago, and it's called Minetest.

Once I can figure out how to get around an odd error keeping people from joining my servers, it would be hilarious to play with my cousins and any of you guys. XD

Still looks like a piece of trash. But oh well... -_-

Except for YGOPRO, I am not playing PC games as of late.

If you're referring to Minetest, you should try it for yourself, it's actually better than Minecraft in some ways, and this is coming from somone who has played Minecraft before. Sure, it's lacking the survival mode, rain, certain sound effects and RPG elements, but as far as building things, it's very much complete, and overall progress is coming along quite nicely, IMO. I'm building up the ultimate house in the sky for when the game has more too it than simply dieing from lava or a massive fall. XD

Packages for different Linux distros aren't available yet, but the generic Linux binary package works out of the box on Ubuntu 12.04; I guess it already has all the right dependencies.
