Go! Go! Troublemakers! (aka Mischief Makers)

Post by Paragon-Yoshi on Tue Jun 19, 2012 4:58 pm

A game for the good old NINTENDO 64!!!

Another wonderful platformer, which sadly didn't get the love it deserved.
At least in the western regions.
It didn't suffer a fate as bad a Shantae, but it still was bad.

It was mainly due the fact that many people still abhorred the japanese style back then.
Since Japan had the status of a Freak Country back then.
(And it still has to an extent. But people don't seem to detest it nearly as much now, as they did back then.)

Anyway, for those who don't know, the game is about the female robot "Marina".
Her professor and creator has been kidnapped by the Evil Empire of Planet Clancer, so she sets out to safe her old man.

Her main form of attack is her GRAB-MOVE. She can grab enemies and various objects in the game.
While grabbed, she can throw them or shake them for various effects.
She is also equipped with a jetpack, that can allow her to stay in air for longer and travel far distances in air.

Here some videos to see it in action:
INTRO (Not the best quality though...)

I'm a bit hesitant to watch the vids, but maybe it suffered from gratiuous Japanese? Foreign cultures don't translate well in some regions, especially here in the US where probably every opinionated hick idiot on planet earth resides and mouths off their garbage like rabid animals. Is it just me or is the rest of the known world above such nonsense? xD I'm getting off-topic though; moving on.

Maybe not so much abhored or detested, more like freaked out. A lot of Japanese stuff sometimes tips over the "this is officially too wierd" scale for people in the states, which really only inforces that "anime is for creepy poofs" stereotype; it's not just limited to the huge eyes in the bishoujo style either. (Don't see how though, a lot of western cartoons have huge eyes too.) Just looking at the beginning frame of those videos is already turning me off to the character art. I'm a little hesitant to watch them, personally, but I also dislike Youtube's CPU-killing flash video player too. (Seriously, who writes a software-based video player? Morons still stuck in the dark ages before hardware acceleration, probably.)

Anyway, the main character seems cute, but I'd also feel dirty playing as what appears to be a little girl, but it could just be the cutesy art style fooling me. Please prove me wrong if possible!

Hey, don't freak out.
It's a really harmless game. On the same level as Shantae. Wink

Marina is cute, but also pretty strong. So strong that she can grab and throw almost anything in the game.
But given that she is a robot, it's understandable.

I dunno what's wrong with the art-style though. o.O

Just look at the videos.
I can tell you, it's nothing bad.

I personally loved the game as a kid. The art style was cool, the story was interesting (although knowing nowadays that the clan language has every noun beginning with clan might seem a bit controversial) but the only thing that bugged me was the use of the Nintendo 64's Dpad. The controls were awkward to begin with until you got used to them.

Ultimately I always look back at this game the same way I do about shantae... Aside from the fact that this game has the nostalgia glasses for me.

It's funny that Kirbopher (the animator behind brawl taunts and Nin10doh) loves this game and how at an anime convention he went to there was only about 5 people screaming when he mentioned this (in a panel with about 100 people in there)

... Obviously I was one of them XD
