Shantae fan film?

Since I got introduced to Shantae (and subsequently watched the entirety of Brickroad's LP), I've had this idea for a fanmade movie based on the first game.

And no, Eddie Lebron wouldn't be attached (even though he is a decent director).

I'm thinking of the fan film as being traditionally animated, with the same jovial and upbeat tone and plot as the game it's based on, Shantae GBC. I was going to suggest Shantae'esque as the main theme, but we're already using that for Shantae Ret-2-Go!. My bad. ^^;

Speaking of music, I'd want TheNittles/LadyArsenic to be on board. Y'know her, right? She made the Labyrinth and Bandit Town remixes. And of course, Peach Toadstool could contribute as well.

Voice actors...I'm not sure yet. I'd like Electricstar to be on board - he'd make a good Bolo. XD (Electricstar's this guy: https://www.youtube.com/user/masterofhomestar) Also, maybe Kimlinh Tran or DustyOldRoses for Risky Boots. Maybe. I've always liked the idea of a Shantae short.
Too bad there's not a lot of males in Shantae: I'd totally love to try my voice out on a project like that. Not sure if I'd be able to do Bolo justice, but perhaps I could find a decent means to mimic Mimic.

I sometimes wonder what sort of voices would best suit these characters, myself. For Shantae, perhaps a voice similar to the one that narrates the iOS trailer. And perhaps something similar for Risky: a little deeper and more spiteful / playful. Bolo could sound a little laid back, maybe like a heroic surfer dude.

Sky seems like she could use a soft, stern tone. And Rotty could have a playful, yet slightly zombielike monotone. As for Mimic, perhaps a lighter, less accented Deckard Cain? Eheh, not sure really. I don't quite see just any stereotypical old man voice going with him

Hm. I like a lot of these. Rottytops, however, I'm not sure; she and her brothers drink a lot of coffee, so a monotone would probably not work for her. I like the playful part, though - she does have quite the bit of energy.

The Sonic Fan Film is absolutely horrible.
And the "director" is a really unlikable person to me. Argh...


I really wouldn't want a trash-work like this to tarnish the image of Shantae.

I didn't say I wanted Eddie Lebron to be attached to this. This is just something I'd personally like to do to get Shantae recognized.

Eddie Lebron, that's a name I haven't heard in a long time! Wasn't he on Family Matters? God he was freaking hilarious on that show! Who can forget Skeeter's quirky european car, or that famous quote, "Did I do that?".

I wasn't a fan of his voicing Sonic back in the day though. That nasally act alone made me want to punch that smug look off the hedgehog's face! =P (I mean, seriously, did he hold his nose the entire time while recording? XD) I think Ryan Drummond, or Roger Craig Smith, did the blue blur infinitely better justice, and Jason Griffith will be forever debatable by the entirety of the fanbase, ugh.

But I digress. Don't plan on watching the fan film for those reasons, and Sonic's spines keep making me think of an exposed skeleton, ewwww. (I'm still holding out for that animated one with a $9,000,000+ budget, personally. Not peaked by the thought of Sally being in it, but it does look good.)

By all means, a Shantae fan film would have to done with extreme care and lots of passion. Using previously unexposed VAs would give exposure to new guys and gals in the industry, while not attracting all kinds of attention at the same time, both good and bad. (I think there are as many people that liked Eddie Lebron's Sonic voicing as there are who can't stand it, for instance.) Also doing it in any so called "art-style", or experimenting too much with the official canon, would turn off way too many people, and considering this fanbase is scattered enough as it is, you're looking at a doomed project from the get-go, with an audience of none.

It has to look beautiful in motion and play out smoothly if it's going to be representing Shantae in any shape or form, and unless it's short and sweet, it means you're looking at setting up a budget for the production too. Just the flash-animated Sonic film I mentioned earlier has a budget in the millions since it's being produced in an actual studio, so imagine how big you're going to have to dream to see something like that become real!

No intention of dousing any passion towards the idea though, I'm just keeping my feet firmly nailed to the ground. Making something like become a reality would be simply amazing, and yet a monumentus task at the same time.

Umm...no, that was Jaleel White. He was Urkel on Family Matters, and he voiced Sonic in those three DiC cartoons and the fan film. Sorry if I'm being a Sonic nerd again. ^^;

I'm aware of this. I'd probably have to actually get an animation program at first and work with it for some time before making this happen. Heck, I have a lot of OCs to work with, so why not?

Still (despite Paragon's wishes), I would like to work on a Shantae fan film sometime - maybe I could get it started here on the Fans Portal; who knows?

I started practicing animation for the very reason of working on a Shantae short to try and raise popularity. Unfortunately it wasn't long before I started working at my current 56 hour a week job, so I don't have much time anymore.

If you guys manage to pull it together though, I can definitely do random character voices since I'm somewhat good at changing my voice for multiple characters (not sure about Mimic or Bolo though, I'm still trying to think of how they should sound.)

Ha, being nerdy would have meant giving me exact dates and a few reference links to boot; there's nothing wrong with simply correcting me, SV! It's been years since I last watched the show; man I'm rusty on character names. XD Makes me wonder if I can find any episodes on Youtube right now.

Exactly, you should already have a lot of experience under your belt before you try any animated shorts with Shantae, and practicing with your own characters is a good starting point. Heck, if any original shorts you produce are of a fair quality, it would be one pretty hefty addition to an art portfolio, IMO.

I don't know about any episodes, but there's a Nostalgia Critic on the show that's actually pretty hilarious (the first Nostalgia Critic I ever watched, actually - may the NC rest in peace).

I hope I produce good quality stuff! ^^ I admit I'm not doing too good at this point, considering I'm not that good a writer (currently collaborating with a friend on a Squid Girl fan crossover), but it's a learning process, and I hope to get better.

Hmm.

I think I might have some ideas for the fan film. Aside from it being traditionally animated and such:

~The fan film could probably go on up to Shantae exiting Scuttle Town and starting her journey
~This could encourage the audience to check out the first game to continue the story

~I have two VAs in mind for Shantae
~One is Dawn Michelle Bennett, the VA for Lilac from Freedom Planet
~The other is Christine Marie Cabanos, the VA for Filia from Skullgirls (voice reel here)

What do you guys think?

Both voices could work in my opinion, though Cabanos would be my preferred between the two.

I also think it would be neat to have it animated based off WayForward's Twitter recap of the first game. Or at least references to it: we NEED to have the scene where Bolo thought Shantae disintegrated and buried her clothes while she was taking a bath.

That would be great, but I'm not sure how the prologue from Twitter would flow with the rest of the fan film. I was just thinking of going right into the game's story.

Shantae as a whole has a very tiny mythos to work with. If there were more questions to ask about the series then the premise would be so much easier to make.

This is something to consider though, as there are <i>some</i> questions.

~Shantae's mother (mentioned in Risky's Revenge over the Oil Lamp)

~The tinkerbats and their loyalty to Risky

~Bolo's relationship to Shantae (shown to be a love interest but not at the same time...?)

~Sky's relationship to Shanter (how did they become friends?)

~The significance of the temples throughout the world (I mean sure it was kind of explained by the ancient stones, but it doesn't explain whom made the stones or why they built dungeons around them)

~The significance of the Barons.

I mean, yes, there are some questions right there; but how many of them actually tie together? Maybe some of them can be brought together by Shantae's prior knowledge to Risky (assuming it was a sequel movie... Which is an okay idea).

Sorry I've been talking mostly about plot, but that's what concerns me the most when it comes to these sorts of things. Regardless, the things that need to be in a Shantae movie are without a doubt Dancing scenes and innuendoes left and right.

Calm down now; the fan film I'm thinking of won't be two hours long! But yeah, those are some questions that do need answering; however, I think it's best to let WayForward give us answers as opposed to coming up with our own.
