Mythology would definitely play a big role, if I were to call the shots..Luke wrote:Very true, there are always aspects in any story that don't translate well into a game. (Or at least one that is fun to play. *Insert 90% of movie-based titles here*) A Shantae comic series could potentially drip with tons of backstory and mythology that wouldn't normally find their way into the games.
Actually, those are just the basic plots.You already have all the story arcs plotted out for your own comics? =P If that's the case, dang, you're definitely serious about making it happen with all the improvements I've seen in more recent additions in your gallery.
They still need to be fully fledged out. ^^;
But I am glad you like them.

I agree too that just because a game or movie has got a specific rating doesn't mean it has to include ALL the criteria that goes with said rating. I'd be fine with just the occasional suggestive themes in a Shantae comic, with any violence and language kept at a comical level.
Say, would this be a good example?

I always wondered about the origin of this comic, but it looks official, perhaps done in-house a while back as a fun little aside. So I couldn't help but crack a smile when Shantae goes to deliver food to someone residing in a cave in Risky's Revenge, thinking it may have been a subtle reference. But that's just me, eheh
First off, I rather enjoyed that little comic. Shantae looked adorable as always, even with brown hair.
Second, I think an anime would be a pretty good idea, at least if it was in the right hands. I'd go for a style like this, though - mainly comedy with a little action on the side. Nothing too dark, just the right format that I personally think would fit the character.

I think it's okay if Shantae takes a darker approach for non-canon third-party stuff.
As long as it isn't blown completely out of proportion.
Some of my personal storylines would also be less comedic and more serious.
(Though of course, comedy would still be present. )

A serious approach wouldn't be so far out of line, anyway (as long as it's not overboard, like mentioned before.)
Let's also note that RR had a fairly dark ending for such a silly series. Well, it's at least not the kind of end you'd expect in a Shantae game.

Re: Shantae Manga/Anime? - (Fun Topic!)
That's a good point.
BTW: If I ever start to work on a Shantae Comic/Manga, would some of you mind to work together with me on the plots?
Like I said, I have the basic storylines, but they aren't fully fledged out yet. ^^;
If I would have someone to fully fledge them out with me, that'd be great.

You know, this whole discussion got me thinking that maybe we should start like a little workshop thread or something.
We could throw around ideas and even make a short little comic to submit and see what people think. Nothing to commit ourselves to right away, just to see where it goes. Paragon's already got quite an expanse of ideas, and I think everyone's got something they've thought of.
Maybe if we can get a good chemistry flowing, we could actually work together on something good.

That's a good idea actually.
I wonder what Luke thinks about this.

Re: Shantae Manga/Anime? - (Fun Topic!)
It's not a bad idea, honestly. As far as what I can contribute, though, is kinda limited, so the most I'll be able to do is bounce off ideas with you guys. I still suck at drawing Shantae's face, (Those infernal cheeks!) and my own original stuff has a bit more priority than fan-made content at the moment. I feel like vomiting at the thought of drawing more fan art, and itching to do something original that will set my wild, rabid imagination loose for a change. It's a sad feeling, but it'll pass eventually, I just don't have any inspiration (Or motivation.) left to sketch commercial video game characters right now.
Re: Shantae Manga/Anime? - (Fun Topic!)
Hmm, perhaps.
I'm not exactly a great artist, but I suppose I could try my hand at simple storyboards
based on what Paragon has laid out, if it's something he and anyone else felt like doing sometime

Hey, we wouldn't only talk about drawings and such.
For the Manga-concept, for example, we could work a plot out together.
Like I came up with basic, yet incomplete plots. And we could join forces to fully fledge them out.
Just to name one example (and not be completely Off-Topic. ).

Re: Shantae Manga/Anime? - (Fun Topic!)
Oh, that would make sense. ^^' Although this topic still isn't completely derailed unless we're strictly discussing how a Shantae manga should be handled overall, content-wise. If that were the case, I think you could already justify starting a new topic about your own manga.
Re: Shantae Manga/Anime? - (Fun Topic!)
It was just an example.
Better ask BossFight for the full concept, cuz I am not the one who made it up. ^^;
Anyway, I guess we're drifting away from the main topic.
So let's get back on that.

Re: Shantae Manga/Anime? - (Fun Topic!)
Well, it probably wasn't too good of an idea for me at this moment anyway. I just threw the idea out there in case anyone else found they wanted to give it a go, but to be completely honest I'm too busy right now to contribute very much. I'll certainly come back to it when I have more free time.

Re: Shantae Manga/Anime? - (Fun Topic!)
This whole thread about making a Shantae fan comic reminds me of an interview that Matt was in regarding the actual demand for Shantae affecting the chances of more games.
Although I'm just involving myself now into this discussion, going back to an earlier part of it mentioned the Zelda manga's. I'd absolutely agree with a comic-based summary of the games. I could see a lot of gaps that could be filled in by the right group or singular artist
No matter what would happen with plot, there'd definitely have to be an intro sort of story. Which brings me to another point that might damage this.
a) Spreading the word
b) Contradicting the lore Matt has.
In the same interview, the man mentioned how he has harddrives full of information, even down to why Risky Boots is so pale. (Heck, we might even be able to find out why they decided to make her not make her wear her belt in the promo images for Risky's Revenge.)
Perhaps a fan comic could elaborate on the process of going from the original game to the abandoned gameboy project? Not a whole lot was released for it, but it brought up some amazing concepts such as Shantae's house and its upgrades. Or perhaps how Wrench became to huge. Thinking it over, being faithful to that could open up a lot of doors too! Don't get me wrong, I think expanding with new ideas outside of source could be amazing, but at the same time, we could easily fulfil a mission that gives people materials to want to play the game rather than only be interested in what the character 'could' do. That was worded wrong, but at this point it all comes down to how all of us love our half genie.
This makes me wonder why no one's talked about animation yet Give me a few willing artists and some contact info and I could get us started on working on flash-based fan projects.

Well that's... interesting. LOL
I see what you're saying though.
And yet, I still think it'd be great to expand horizons and go for new stuff.
Though it's not so easy to actually find willing artists. ^^;
But I think it's worth trying.

Re: Shantae Manga/Anime? - (Fun Topic!)
I'd take a crack at animated shorts if I had any ideas, personally. (And when I get around to compiling KTooN from source, thank you Software Center for not including it in your repos anymore! D:) Just imagine all the crazy things one could do with them. =P
Re: Shantae Manga/Anime? - (Fun Topic!)
Coming back to this. LOL
And I am sure you can tell that I am full of ideas, but not able to do anything useful with em. ^^;
So I think we could collaborate.
